Carl Jones
Carl Jones leads emerging science and technology initiatives in plant sciences and raw materials at the Mars Advanced Research Institute (MARI). His work focuses on developing scalable solutions for resilient, regenerative food systems that both nourish people and sustain the planet.
Carl earned his M.S. in Horticulture with a minor in Food Science from Oregon State University, where his pioneering research led to the development of the antioxidant-rich “Indigo” series of purple tomatoes. He holds a Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of California, Davis, where he studied nutritional enhancement in tomatoes.
Before joining Mars, Carl served as Head of Innovation and New Technologies at Bayer Vegetables, where he led the global gene-editing portfolio and served on Bayer’s Research Leadership Team. With over 25 years of experience spanning academia and industry, Carl is the author of numerous scientific publications and inventor on more than a dozen U.S. and international patents.
He represents Mars on several external boards, including the University–Industry Consortium (U.S.), the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research’s Crops of the Future program, and multiple industry advisory committees.
